Thomas R. Lansner

Thomas Lansner is an adjunct associate professor of international affairs at SIPA. From 1999 to 2001 he was also assistant dean at SIPA and advised the IMC and human rights concentrations. In addition to teaching, Lansner works with Columbia's Center for the Study of Human Rights in training visiting international human rights advocates on media skills.

His research interests include African and Asian affairs, democratization, human rights, communications, media freedom, and training issues. He has been a freelance correspondent in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East for numerous publications, including London Observer, the Guardian, and Far Eastern Economic Review (1980–1990). He has performed consulting services to various international official and nongovernmental organizations and political parties on elections, civil society, human rights, and media issues since 1991.

Professor Lansner holds a BA from Hobart College (1975). He received an MIA from SIPA (1991).
