Miles Pomper
Miles Pomper became
editor of Arms Control Today in March 2003. ACT is published by the Arms
Control Association, a non-profit organization in Washington, DC dedicated to
promoting public understanding of and support for effective arms control
policies.
Miles graduated from
SIPA in 1991 with a concentration in International Political Economy, and a
fair amount of regional specialization in Latin American Studies. He jokes that "one can see how directly
relevant my studies were to my current career," but adds that he came away
from SIPA with a considerable amount of knowledge, particularly what he learned
in a course he took with Political Science Professor Robert Jervis. He also
holds a masters degree in journalism from Northwestern University.
Miles finished his time at SIPA in 1 1/2 years after being admitted to the Foreign Service with the U.S. Information Agency. For several years, he served as the assistant information officer and as a spokesperson of the U.S. Embassy in Caracas, Venezuela. Before joining ACA, Mr. Pomper was the lead foreign policy reporter for CQ Weekly, where he covered the full range of foreign policy issues, including arms control and proliferation concerns. He traveled to Russia to monitor the progress of the Nunn-Lugar cooperative threat reduction program, delved deeply into the proliferation concerns behind Iraq and North Korea, and dissected the Moscow Treaty between the United States and Russia. He has also worked at the Legi-Slate News Service and has written several book chapters and analytical articles for publications such as Foreign Service Journal and the Houston Chronicle.
